The History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is known as a celebration of love and romance, but its origins are not as romantic as you might think.

The name Valentine is believed to come from a Roman priest in the third century AD. At that time, the reigning Emperor Claudius II banned marriage because he believed single men made better soldiers. A priest named Valentine disagreed and secretly performed marriage ceremonies. When it was discovered what he was doing he was imprisoned.

According to legend, Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and signed a letter to her “from your Valentine,” a phrase still used today.

Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world, most commonly by giving gifts and cards as a symbol of love.
