Today marks the 81st anniversary of VE Day. It is a moment to remember the courage, sacrifice and resilience of those who lived through the Second World War.

Eighty-one years later, we still enjoy many freedoms because of that extraordinary generation. Communities came together during unimaginable hardship. Families carried enormous burdens. Countless men and women gave their lives so future generations could live in peace.

With conflict and uncertainty once again dominating headlines around the world, today feels especially poignant. It reminds us that peace should never be taken for granted. The lessons of history remain just as important today.

Today, we remember them with gratitude, respect and humility.
